When the first missionary arrived in November 1839, he was delightfully astonished to find eager souls ready for baptism, thanks to the dedicated fellowship of the Murphys. Legend has it that Murphy even visited Joseph Smith shortly before the Prophet’s martyrdom in Carthage Jail, where Smith shared his prophetic vision of an impending war in South Carolina and urged Murphy to return to warn his fellow citizens!

During the highly anticipated temple open house, Deputy Chief of Staff Michael LeFever stepped in for Governor James Hodges, who was busy dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd. This devoted deputy, whose daughter took piano lessons from a Church member, marveled at the excitement growing within the family as they waited for his daughter. He couldn’t believe his luck when he not only saw a picture of the temple but also received a VIP tour of the incredible building! The governor even sent a heartfelt personal letter, which the deputy read aloud, praising the Church members for their tireless efforts in bringing this magnificent temple to life.
Amidst the joy, the Wilcox family from Asheville, North Carolina, faced heartbreaking news on the morning of their scheduled dedication session. Mark and Judy Wilcox learned that their son, Brad, had tragically lost his life in a car accident the night before. With strength and grace, Sister Wilcox chose to honor her commitment to sing at the dedication, buoyed by priesthood blessings that brought comfort during their difficult time. President Gordon B. Hinckley’s uplifting words about the Plan of Salvation and temple teachings offered them solace in their sorrow.
The Columbia, South Carolina, Temple proudly claims its title as the first temple built in this vibrant state. Excitingly, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on the same day as the Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico Temple, marking a historic occasion for the Church!
During an incredible ten-day open house, nearly 20,000 eager visitors flocked to explore the temple’s interior! Spanning an impressive 10,700 square feet, the Columbia, South Carolina, Temple was announced to the world on September 11, 1998, with its groundbreaking and site dedication held on December 5, 1998, led by Gordon T. Watts. The public open house welcomed all from September 30th to October 9th, 1999, and the temple’s dedication, masterfully conducted by the late Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, took place from October 16 to 17, 1999. Set on a generous 3.6 acres, the temple dazzles with its stunning Imperial Danby White variegated marble exterior quarried from Vermont, topped with a magnificent single spire crowned by a gold-leafed angel Moroni statue.
Inside, the Columbia, South Carolina, Temple boasts two progressive instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all crafted with care and reverence. Perched at an elevation of 307 feet, this stunning temple is not just a building—it’s a beacon of hope and faith for all who visit!
