Nestled in the picturesque hills of Draper, Utah, the Draper Utah T emple stands as a remarkable achievement that embodies dedication and artistry. Located at 14065 Canyon Vista Ln, this sacred space has captivated many since its announcement on October 2, 2004.
Groundbreaking and Dedication
A significant milestone for this endeavor was the groundbreaking and site dedication, which took place on August 5, 2006. Conducted by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, the event marked a moment of gratitude, as he proclaimed, “It is a great tribute to our people. They are so faithful in temple attendance, and it is for this reason that we construct this beautiful house of the Lord.”
Public Open House and Features
The public open house ran from January 15 to March 14 in 2009, drawing an impressive 684,721 guests who explored the intricate details and the overall elegance of the T emple.
Among the architectural marvels of the Draper Utah T emple is the gold-leafed Angel Moroni, which was installed on July 8, 2008, adding a touch of brilliance to the skyline. The dedication itself was conducted from March 20 to 22, 2009, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, solidifying its spiritual significance.
Architectural Highlights
Spread over 12 acres, the Draper Utah T emple boasts a stunning exterior, finished with white granite imported from China. Rising to a height of 166 feet and positioned at an elevation of 5,136 feet, its grandeur is matched by the beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
The design features a single attached central spire crowned with the Angel Moroni statue. Inside, the T emple consists of 58,300 square feet housing four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The largest sealing room accommodates up to 80 patrons, ensuring ample space for important ceremonies.
A Touch of Nature
Incorporating local elements, the Draper Utah T emple carries a theme inspired by the sego lily, the state flower of Utah. This detail reflects not only the cultural heritage but also a deep connection to the natural beauty of the region.
The architectural intricacies extend to the windows and doors, with 221 exterior and 50 interior windows. With a total of 35,420 hand-cut pieces of glass, the designs feature the Log Cabin quilt pattern, a homage to the early pioneers of the area. The use of Makore wood from Africa adds warmth and richness to the interior, while the limestone sourced from France enhances its exterior elegance.
Light and Space
Natural light permeates the baptistry, situated on the western side of the building, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that create a serene atmosphere. The ordinance rooms showcase hand-painted panoramas depicting mountain scenes, including a view of Draper’s Corner Canyon and the sweeping Salt Lake Valley.
The expansive parking lot accommodates up to 492 vehicles, ensuring accessibility for all attending.
