The Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple is not just any building—it’s a spectacular architectural gem that tells a captivating story! Picture this: on October 3, 2009, the journey began, and fast forward to July 18, 2011, when the ground was officially broken for this stunning construction by Walter F. Gonzalez. After years of eager anticipation, the temple opened its doors for a sneak peek to the public from March 19 to April 19, 2014, leading up to its grand dedication by Dieter F. Uchtdorf on May 4, 2014!
Set on a sprawling 16.82-acre site in Davie, this temple features an eye-catching precast concrete facade and a towering spire topped with a dazzling gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Standing tall at 99 feet, it offers two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, a baptistry, and a generous 30,500 square feet of sacred space. What makes it even more special? The artistic motifs throughout the temple celebrate the local scenery, with delightful designs of sun and palm trees woven seamlessly into classic Neoclassical architectural elements like arches and columns.
But wait, there’s more! The land where the temple now thrives has an intriguing backstory. Originally slated for a middle school in 2003, the Broward County School Board shifted gears by 2009, making way for the Church’s vision to take root. After some paperwork and educational impact fees, the stage was set for this beautiful temple to rise. An amendment to the use agreement changed the zoning from a community facility to the temple, while still keeping the door open for future residential development in the area.
Strategically located just north of Griffin Road and Interstate 75, with the picturesque Robbins – Vista View Trail bordering it along Shotgun Road, this temple is more than a place of worship; it’s a tranquil escape for the community. Its stunning design and rich history make it a centerpiece in the spiritual landscape of South Florida, inviting everyone to come and enjoy its beauty!
