The announcement of the Grand Junction Colorado Temple was made public on April 4, 2021, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during the General Conference. This temple was announced at the 191st Annual General Conference, marking a significant expansion of the church in Colorado. The first mission of the Church in this state was established in 1896, followed shortly by the formation of the first official congregation in January 1897. By the time of the announcement, Colorado was home to over 150,000 members and approximately 310 congregations. This temple became the third for the state, following the Denver Colorado Temple in 1986 and the Fort Collins Colorado Temple in 2016.
Groundbreaking and Dedication
The groundbreaking and dedication of the House of the Lord took place on April 16, 2022. Apostle Chi Hong Sam Wong of the Quorum of the Seventy presided over the ceremony. At the time, Wong expressed gratitude for the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the promise of resurrection. He emphasized the importance of maintaining positive spiritual momentum in life as the ground was dedicated.
The Grand Junction Colorado Temple is built on a 6.94-acre area and measures 29,630 square feet. Its height reaches 118 feet and 8 inches. The temple, featuring one attached spire, is distinctively designed without a traditional gold-leafed statue.
Architectural Features
The exterior finish of the Grand Junction Colorado Temple utilizes Portuguese Pedras Salgadas granite, which harmonizes with the surrounding high-desert vistas. This thoughtful design approach connects the temple to the rugged terrain and the confluence of two major rivers that shape the area.
The interior is equally captivating, featuring millwork crafted from African sapele hardwood, with a peach blossom design paying homage to the region’s orchards. The artwork within includes significant pieces such as “Joy in the Journey” and “Sunset at San Ysidro,” capturing the dramatic landscapes of the American West.
Elements of Design
- Art Glass: The artwork incorporates the claret cup’s crimson color complemented by shades of amber, green, and pale pink, highlighting local botanical elements in an elevated context.
- Flooring and Colors: The primary flooring stone is Mineo marble, accented by various colored marbles that reflect the southwestern canyon landscapes. The interior palette draws inspiration from the claret cup cactus and local flora.
- Lighting Fixtures: Crystal chandeliers and fixtures with antique brass finishes illuminate key rooms such as the bride’s room and celestial room, enhancing the atmosphere of elegance.

An open house is scheduled from September 11, 2025, through September 27, 2025, allowing the public to explore this remarkable House of the Lord.
