Discovering the Nashville Tennessee Temple
The Nashville Tennessee Temple, dedicated in 2000, stands as the 84th dedicated Temple in operation, located at 344 Ernest Rice Ln in Franklin, Tennessee. This breathtaking site is situated about 15 miles south of Nashville’s state capital and is nestled next to the Franklin Tennessee Stake Center, surrounded by scenic horse farms and the historic Battle Ground Academy.

Announcement and Groundbreaking
The journey for the Nashville Tennessee Temple began on November 9, 1994, when the Prophet Howard W. Hunter announced its construction to the public. After years of anticipation, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 13, 1999, despite inclement weather. Elder John K. Carmack led the event, drawing parallels between the challenges of securing the site and Jacob’s patience from Old Testament times.
The Open House and Dedication
From May 6 to May 13, 2000, an open house allowed a total of 24,300 guests to explore the Temple. Shortly after, on May 21, 2000, it was officially dedicated by Apostle James E. Faust. This four-session dedication saw an attendance of 6,052 individuals.
Architectural Features
Design and Dimensions
Constructed on 6.86 acres, the Nashville Tennessee Temple features stunning imperial danby white marble for its exterior finish. The architectural design includes a single attached end spire topped with a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. Covering 10,700 square feet and rising to a height of 22 meters, this single-story Temple presents a harmonious aesthetic within its beautiful surroundings. Sitting at an elevation of 653 feet, it offers a picturesque view of the rural landscape.
Interior Layout
Within its elegant walls, the Temple houses two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, facilitating a variety of sacred activities and gatherings. It is designed to be both functional and uplifting for those who engage with it.
Significance in the Region
The Nashville Tennessee Temple holds special significance as the first Temple in the city of Nashville and the second in Tennessee, following the Memphis Tennessee Temple, which was dedicated just a month earlier. Originally planned as a significant regional Temple, it serves the Upper South and contributes meaningfully to the spiritual life of the area.
Challenges and Triumphs
The path to constructing the Nashville Tennessee Temple was not without obstacles. From 1995 to 1998, efforts to rezone land for the Temple in Forest Hills faced legal setbacks, leading to a change of plans in 1998. The revised location was ultimately chosen to fulfill the vision for this sacred space.

An excerpt from the dedicatory prayer beautifully encapsulates the intentions behind this sacred space: “It is our gift of love. Please accept of it, dear Father, as an expression of the faith we have in Thine eternal purposes.”
