On April 3, 2016, during the inspiring 186th Annual General Conference, Prophet Thomas S. Monson joyfully announced the plans for the Harare Zimbabwe Temple, marking a significant milestone for the Church and its members in Zimbabwe. Fast forward to December 12, 2020, and the excitement reached new heights as Elder Edward Dube, a beloved native of Zimbabwe and 1st Counselor in the African South Area Presidency, conducted the groundbreaking and site dedication ceremony. He poignantly remarked, “As we watch the rising of this building from the ground up, may we also turn our hearts upward to Thee and Thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.” At the groundbreaking ceremony was President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, was also in attendance. President Mnangagwa praised the Church in his remarks, saying, “The contribution of the Church to national development and social well being of the citizenry cannot be overemphasized.”
This moment was made even more special with the presence of President Mnangagwa, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe. He emphasized the profound impact of the Church in uplifting national development and social well-being, stating, “The contribution of the Church to national development and social well-being of the citizenry cannot be overemphasized.”
As we eagerly await the public open house from January 22 to February 7, 2026, the Harare Zimbabwe Temple at 65 Enterprise Road Highlands Harare stands as a beacon of hope and faith. Mark your calendars for the dedication on March 1, 2026, to be led by Apostle Gerrit W. Gong.
Spanning 6.7 acres and a remarkable 17,247 square feet, the temple boasts a striking height of 103 feet 4 inches, featuring architectural details such as a single attached end spire, though it won’t have the traditional gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Inside, it will offer two Instruction Rooms, two Sealing Rooms, and a baptistry, thoughtfully designed to serve the growing community.
The temple’s rendering was unveiled on October 1, 2020, giving a glimpse of the spiritual haven that will soon be realized. Conveniently located in the same parking lot as the stake center, it promises to ease the journey for many faithful members patrons previously faced a daunting 13-hour trek to the Johannesburg South African Temple.
With the Church membership in Zimbabwe reaching an inspiring 26,000 members, six stakes, and two districts, the Harare Zimbabwe Temple will be the eighth temple built in Africa and the very first in the beautiful nation of Zimbabwe. This temple represents not just a place of Temple Work, but a symbol of faith, resilience, and hope for countless individuals and families. Exciting times lie ahead!
