We are pleased to announce significant developments regarding the Harare Zimbabwe Temple, which was introduced during the 186th Annual General Conference on April 3, 2016, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This announcement initiated a pivotal journey toward establishing a place of Temple Work and connection within the community.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 12, 2020, and was presided over by Elder Edward Dube, a distinguished native of Zimbabwe and 1st Counselor in the African South Area Presidency. In his remarks, Elder Dube expressed the hope that as the temple rises from the ground, the hearts of those involved would also turn upward in devotion to God and His Son, Jesus Christ. The presence of President Mnangagwa at this ceremony underscored the temple’s significance, as he acknowledged the Church’s contributions to national development and social well-being. At the groundbreaking ceremony was President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, was also in attendance. President Mnangagwa praised the Church in his remarks, saying, “The contribution of the Church to national development and social well being of the citizenry cannot be overemphasized.”
The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will open to the public for an Open House from January 22 to February 7, 2026. This event will offer an opportunity for the community to explore the facility, located at 65 Enterprise Road, Highlands, Harare. The temple will encompass an area of 6.7 acres and stand at a height of 103 feet 4 inches, featuring a single attached end spire without a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Inside, it will include two Instruction Rooms, two Sealing Rooms, and one baptistry, totaling 17,247 square feet.
The architectural rendering of the temple was released on October 1, 2020, and it represents a substantial advancement for members of the Church in Zimbabwe, patrons previously faced a 13-hour journey to the Johannesburg South African Temple. The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will be the first in Zimbabwe and the eighth in Africa, serving a membership base of approximately 26,000, organized into six stakes and two districts.
The visit of Prophet Russell M. Nelson to the temple site on April 17, 2018, further emphasized the importance of this Temple and inspired enthusiasm within the community. The Harare Zimbabwe Temple is poised to become a vital center for Temple Work, fostering unity, spiritual growth, and a stronger community connection. We look forward to witnessing the Open House of this significant addition to our landscape.
