LDS Temple News Presents Tallahassee Florida Temple

The Tallahassee Florida Temple was announced on April 5, 2020, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson. This beautiful edifice is located at 440 Papillion Way, Tallahassee, Florida 32309, and represents a significant development for the region.

Groundbreaking and Dedication

On June 5, 2021, the groundbreaking and site dedication occurred, led by James B. Martino. The much-anticipated open house took place from November 4 to November 23, 2024. During this time, an impressive total of 40,976 individuals toured the Temple, a figure that far exceeded the anticipated 25,000. The formal dedication of the Tallahassee Florida Temple took place on December 8, 2024, and was presided over by Apostle Patrick Kearon.

Architectural Details

The Tallahassee Florida Temple is built on 4.97 acres and features a single attached central tower. This one-story building spans 29,355 square feet and reaches a height of 125 feet, including its spire. At an elevation of 204 feet, it stands as a prominent feature in the city.

Exterior Finish
The exterior is designed with precast concrete panels, providing a durable and elegant appearance. Among its notable artistic elements, the exterior art glass is created with a Magnolia Motif, showcasing local flora. The main Celestial Room doors are adorned with an arched glass transom featuring radial patterns and a magnolia flower design.

Interior Art and Design
Inside, original artwork reflects the local environment and Christian teachings. Key works include a large Florida marshland and cypress tree landscape by artist Josh Clare, along with a moving Biblical painting titled “She Offered All, Even All Her Living” by Heather Edwards. This piece illustrates the poignant story of a poor widow offering her last pennies as a gesture of faith.

Lighting and Fixtures
The light fixtures inside the Temple draw inspiration from mid-1800s designs, showcasing lanterns, crystal accents, and bronze finishes that resemble antique brass. The baptistry includes fixtures with carved magnolia rosettes, while the Celestial and sealing rooms feature elegant chandeliers and sconces adorned with Egyptian cut crystals and floral motifs.

Historical Context

This Temple holds a special place in local history. It is the first Temple built in Tallahassee and the first in Leon County. At the time of its announcement, it marked the third Temple constructed in Florida, following the Orlando Florida Temple in 1994 and the Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple in 2014.

A noteworthy aspect of the dedication is that it became the westernmost house of the Lord in Florida. The Temple district includes eight stakes, spanning five in northern Florida, two in southern Georgia, and one in Alabama.

Community Impact

Florida boasted more than 172,000 membership, encompassing nearly 275 congregations at the time of dedication. As the 202nd dedicated Temple in operation worldwide, the Tallahassee Florida Temple is the 16th Temple dedicated in 2024, marking the last one dedicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that year.

In summary, the Tallahassee Florida Temple stands as a significant development, bringing together faith, beauty, and cultural reflection into one magnificent establishment.
