Exploring the Denver Colorado Temple: A Historical Overview
Nestled in a beautiful neighborhood at 2001 E Phillips Cir, Centennial, Colorado, the Denver Colorado Temple stands as the 40th dedicated Temple in operation. Announced on March 31, 1982, its journey began with a vision that would soon come to life.
The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 19, 1984, led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This event marked a significant milestone in the construction journey, as local members had already begun collecting funds to bring this architectural marvel to fruition.
After years of anticipation, the public opened its doors from September 8 through 27, 1986. During this time, an impressive 140,000 people took the opportunity to explore the Denver Temple, experiencing its beauty and significance.
The grand dedication occurred from October 24 to 28, 1986, officiated by Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. During the dedicatory services, more than 28,000 individuals came together to celebrate this monumental occasion. During the cornerstone ceremony, Benson described the Temple as a “beacon to members and nonmembers alike…a constant, visible symbol that God has not left man to grope in darkness.”
Covering 7.5 acres, the facility has an impressive total area of 29,117 square feet. At a height of 90 feet and situated at an elevation of 5,728 feet, this Temple is not just a notable presence in the landscape; it is also a remarkable feat of architecture designed with exterior walls made of precast stone and a built-up roof.
One of its distinctive features is the single attached end spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, standing tall against the Colorado sky. The interior boasts four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry, facilitating a variety of sacred activities.
