Nestled along the picturesque banks of the Snake River, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple stands as an extraordinary testament to design and community passion. Located at 1000 Memorial Dr, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402, this Temple has a rich history and serves as a cherished site for many individuals.

Historic Milestones

The seeds for the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple were sown on March 3, 1937, when the announcement was made, sparking enthusiasm among local residents. Just over a year later, on December 19, 1938, Elder David Smith broke ground for its construction. After two years of dedicated effort, the Temple was officially dedicated on October 19, 1940 by the revered Prophet David O. McKay, marking a significant moment in the area’s history.

Architectural Marvel

Spanning 85,624 square feet and towering at 156 feet, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple’s architecture features a striking single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. Designed to reflect a vision inspired by the ancient Nephite Temple, its exterior showcases reinforced concrete with cast stone, with walls measuring 16 inches thick constructed from two-inch thick slabs.

Interestingly, the site selected for the Temple revealed large lava rock during excavation, which was creatively utilized for the basement walls, adding unique characteristics to its overall design.

Renovation and Updates

The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple underwent a significant renovation that concluded with a rededication on June 4, 2017, overseen by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. This extensive two-year renovation included various enhancements, such as an additional exit for the Bride and Groom’s room and a spacious waiting area for weddings. Modern upgrades to electrical systems also improved functionality while preserving the Temple’s essence.

The most recent public open house, which ran from April 22 to May 20, 2017, provided an opportunity for the community to appreciate these updates.

Unique Features

Boasting four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is one of only seven Temples where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before arriving at the Celestial Room. The original design included three reflection ponds with fish and water lilies, which were later transformed into vibrant flowerbeds during a landscaping renovation in 2011, giving way to a beautiful waterfall feature.

A Legacy of Dedication

Significantly, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is the first built in Idaho, as well as the only Temple dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith. Its long history also includes a notable achievement on September 5, 1983, when the gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue was installed by helicopter, a spectacular addition to its iconic profile.

For those who appreciate architectural beauty and historical significance, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple presents an inspiring narrative woven into the fabric of Idaho Falls. Its stunning design, heritage, and landscape make it a remarkable destination for reflecting on the beauty of commitment and faith.
