The Lubbock Texas Temple was announced on April 2, 2000, by the Prophet during the General Conference. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on November 4, 2000, presided over by Elder Rex D. Pinegar. During the groundbreaking, Elder Pinegar expressed the feelings associated with creating a home, emphasizing the profound experience of love and belonging that it represents. He remarked that this Temple would serve as a ‘heavenly home,’ where individuals could feel the presence of divine guidance and love.
The public open house occurred from March 23, 2002, to March 30, 2002. Many attendees had the opportunity to explore the Temple’s interior before its dedication. Finally, the Lubbock Texas Temple was dedicated on April 21, 2002, by President Gordon B. Hinckley, who stated, “The Lubbock Texas Temple has become a source of light and hope for many, teaching the fundamental principles of love and service.”
Architectural Features
Covering an area of 16,498 square feet and situated on 2.7 acres, the architecture of the Lubbock Texas Temple is both elegant and functional. The exterior finish showcases Empress white and majestic gray granite quarried in China, complemented by a single attached spire crowned with a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue.

Art and Light Fixtures
The Temple features a blend of original oil paintings and watercolor prints showcasing scenes from the life of Christ and the Texas landscape. Elements such as the bluebonnet, the state flower, are depicted within pastel skies and vibrant sunsets.
The light fixtures are characterized by elegant crystal chandeliers and sconces crafted from crystal, bronze, and acrylic elements. These details harmoniously blend with the serene ambiance of the interior space.
Doors and Windows
The interior doors are predominantly made from light-colored wood, adorned with hand-carved floral and wheat motifs that symbolize abundance. The more sacred ordinance and sealing rooms contain ornate wooden doors with brass or gold-plated hardware.
In contrast, the exterior doors are rich, heavy dark wood, featuring traditional paneling and polished brass hardware that aligns with the overall elegant design of the Temple.
Significance in Texas
The Lubbock Texas Temple is notable for being the first Temple built in Lubbock County and the third Temple in the state of Texas. Before its construction, the Dallas Texas Temple was built in 1984, followed by the Houston Texas Temple in 2000. Remarkably, the groundbreaking for the Lubbock Temple coincided with that of the Monterrey Mexico Temple, linking these two sites in a shared effort to serve their respective communities.
