The announcement of the Meridian Idaho Temple was made public by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the 181st General Conference on April 2, 2011. During this period of rapid growth in Meridian—identified as the third-largest city and fastest-growing city in the state—population increased by 115 percent from 2000 to 2010. This surge prompted the establishment of three additional stakes in Meridian as well as four more nearby in Nampa, Kuna, and Middleton.

The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on August 23, 2014, presided over by Apostle David A. Bednar. He highlighted the importance of gratitude and urged attendees to view the Temple as a light of the restored gospel. This vision was embraced by local leaders, including Meridian’s Mayor Tammy deWeerd and Ada County Commissioner Dave Cases.

The Dedication and Architectural Features

The public open house for the Meridian Idaho Temple was held from October 21 to November 11, 2017, attracting over 200,000 attendees. The Temple was officially dedicated on November 19, 2017, in three sessions by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf. In his dedicatory prayer, he expressed hope that all who enter would feel a deep connection to sacred covenants.

The design of the Meridian Idaho Temple combines modern classical architecture with local charm. It encompasses 67,331 square feet across three stories and stands at a height of 120.2 feet, situated on 15.73 acres. The exterior is finished in precast concrete, featuring an attached central tower topped by a 13-foot-6-inch statue of the angel Moroni, raised on July 20, 2016.

Unique Artistic Elements

The architectural design boasts an octagonal dome, and the elegant art glass features geometric, Art Deco-inspired patterns with stylized, blossoming lily-like flowers. The interior incorporates Idaho’s state flower, the syringa, through various artistic motifs.

Interior Highlights

Inside, the Temple’s light fixtures are a spectacle, with multi-tiered crystal and bronze chandeliers providing a warm glow. The interior doors, crafted from durable Sapele African mahogany, are accented by decorative hardware, while the artistic exterior doors feature intricate art glass design.

Baptistry Design

The baptismal font area showcases a beautiful railing with geometric patterns made from rich wood complemented by decorative metal accents, reflecting local flora.

Community Impact

In a memorable cultural celebration marking the Temple’s dedication, nearly 6,000 youth from 16 local stakes convened for a musical event entitled “Be Strong, Steadfast, and Immovable,” held at the Taco Bell Arena at Boise State University. President Uchtdorf recognized these young participants as vital treasures to the community, underscoring their future role in shaping the area.

The Meridian Idaho Temple stands as a testament to the unity and growth of the area, offering a space for reflection and enrichment amid its lovely grounds dotted with scenic walkways and ponds. Its location near the Boise River enhances the serene atmosphere, contributing to a profound sense of purpose within the fabric of Idaho life.
