The Ogden Utah Temple stands proudly as the 14th dedicated temple in operation, a true embodiment of faith and community. Announced on August 24, 1967, its development marked the beginning of an exciting chapter in the area. The first site dedication took place on September 8, 1969, under the leadership of Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer, setting the stage for its construction.
On the same day, Hugh B. Brown conducted the groundbreaking ceremony, fueling enthusiasm and anticipation among community members. The temple opened its doors for a highly successful public open house from December 16-30, 1971, attracting an impressive 181,000 guests eager to experience its beauty and sacredness.
Officially dedicated from January 18-20, 1972, by Joseph Fielding Smith, the Ogden Utah Temple solidified its vital role in the community. This dedication marked a monumental occasion, and nearly four decades later, the temple underwent a second open house from August 1 through September 6, 2014, followed by its rededication on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, reaffirming its significance in the lives of many.
Situated on 9.96 acres in the heart of downtown Ogden, the temple boasts a striking exterior adorned with granite quarried and fabricated in China. Its architectural elegance shines with a single central spire, topped with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni. Inside, the temple spans an expansive 112,232 square feet, featuring six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry—making it a true sanctuary for reflection and worship.
Standing tall at 188 feet and 8 inches, the temple sits at an elevation of 4,299 feet, enhancing its impressive stature. With its beautiful water features, lush trees, and impeccably manicured grounds, the temple creates a peaceful and inviting atmosphere for all who visit.
Notably, the Ogden Utah Temple is the fifth temple built in Utah and proudly holds the distinction of being the first dedicated in the state—80 years after the previous four temples were consecrated while Utah was still a territory. A poignant moment in its dedication history occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee stepped in to complete the dedicatory prayer after Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith became too weak to continue, underscoring the deep spiritual significance of this sacred place.
