The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple stands as a remarkable addition to the landscape of sacred spaces, marking its place as the 196th dedicated temple in operation. Nestled at 2093 Powell Road in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, this beautiful structure evokes a sense of reverence and community.
The journey to this temple began when it was announced by Prophet Russell M. Nelson on April 5, 2020, igniting excitement and anticipation among church members. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on August 21, 2021, was led by Elder Randall K. Bennett, who poignantly reminded everyone present, “Please let today’s groundbreaking also be a day of emotional and spiritual building in our own lives and families.”
After years of anticipation, the temple opened its doors to the public for an open house from August 16 to August 31, 2024, allowing many to explore its sacred interiors. The dedication, a significant milestone, took place on September 15, 2024, officiated by the esteemed Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf.
Spanning 5.8 acres, the temple features stunning granite cladding sourced from Portugal, giving it a timeless elegance. Its architectural design includes a striking single central spire, though it notably does not have a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue—a unique feature among many temples.
Inside, visitors are treated to a thoughtfully designed space, including two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. With a size of 32,240 square feet and reaching a height of 125 feet, the temple is not only spacious but also strikingly beautiful. The interior features a soothing green carpet with a soft gold pattern, complemented by nylon rugs in the entry and waiting areas. The stone used within is Crema Ella marble from Turkey, adding to the overall elegance.
One of the standout features is the celestial room, adorned with an organic leaf pattern that creates a tranquil ambiance. The sealing room and celestial room are graced with crystal chandeliers, which shine bright through frosted glass accented with brass and crystal, enhancing the divine atmosphere.
This new temple serves as a spiritual haven for around 100,000 Latter-day Saints in the Pittsburgh area, being the second temple to be built in Pennsylvania. Interestingly, Pennsylvania holds a special place in LDS history; it was here that Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon in Oakland Township and where John the Baptist appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, restoring the Aaronic Priesthood. This historic moment led to their baptism in the Susquehanna River—a testament to the deep roots and significance of faith in this beautiful state.
