The journey to create the Pocatello Idaho Temple began on April 2, 2017, when the announcement was made. Following this, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place on March 16, 2019, led by Elder Wilford W. Andersen. The excitement surrounding the building grew as its public open house was held from September 18 to October 23, 2021, during which 250,721 individuals walked through its doors. Finally, the Temple was dedicated on November 7, 2021, by Apostle M. Russell Ballard.
Architectural Features
The exterior of the Pocatello Idaho Temple is striking, built of white granite sourced from China. It features a central spire that is complemented by a gold-leafed statue of Angel Moroni. Covering an impressive 71,125 square feet, the Temple rises to a height of 194 feet and 6 inches, standing at an elevation of 4,989 feet.
Inside the Temple
Inside, the design includes four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all crafted to provide a serene environment. One of the notable features is a grand staircase clad in travertine limestone. The chapel area boasts a beautiful stained glass window depicting Jesus Christ holding a Lamb, capturing the essence of faith and inspiration.
Landscaping and Surroundings
The Temple is situated on 10.94 acres, adorned with over 500 trees and thousands of colorful flowers. The dominant species of trees include Norwegian sunset maple, sawleaf zelkova, and Dolgo crabapple. Brightly blooming shrubs, such as English lavender, snowberry, and snow queen hydrangea, add bursts of color. A perimeter of white firs, alpine firs, and lodgepole pines were thoughtfully selected from local mountain areas.
Connection to the Region
The Pocatello Idaho Temple is the sixth of its kind in Idaho. Interestingly, an earlier initiative in the 1930s aimed to establish a temple in this area but was postponed due to water-related challenges. This delay turned into a long-term vision that finally came to fruition in 2017.
The stained glass windows inside showcase the wildflowers of the Idaho mountain desert, featuring the state flower, syringa, alongside the bitterroot. The art glass employs colors evocative of local landscapes: sage for the region’s sagebrush, gold for sunlit grasses, and shades of pink and coral representing sunsets and the native flora.
