A Brief History
The journey of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple began on March 3, 1937, when it was first announced. After much anticipation, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 19, 1938, officiated by Elder David Smith. The site was dedicated on October 19, 1940, by Prophet David O. McKay, marking an important moment in the region’s history.
The Temple underwent significant renovations in recent years, culminating in a public open house from April 22 through May 20, 2017. Following the renovations, the rededication occurred on June 4, 2017, led by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. The improvements included an additional exit for the Bride and Groom’s room and a spacious waiting area for weddings, reflecting a modern touch without compromising the original spirit of the place.
Architectural Splendor
Occupying 8.28 acres, the building showcases an impressive 85,624 square feet of thoughtfully designed space. At a height of 156 feet, it features a striking single attached central spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, a detail that has captivated admirers for decades.
The exterior is crafted from reinforced concrete, finished with a white cement aggregate cast stone that forms 16-inch thick walls. This substantial design not only defines the Temple’s aesthetic but also its durability against the elements. Interestingly, excavations revealed large lava rock, which was creatively utilized for the basement walls during construction.
Unique Features
The Temple houses four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, facilitating various sacred ceremonies. Notably, it is one of only seven Temples where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room—this distinctive feature makes it valuable among others in its category.
Originally named the Idaho Falls Temple, it was the first Temple constructed in Idaho and the only one dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith. The original design draws inspiration from an ancient vision of Nephite architecture, emphasizing a deep-rooted connection to spiritual heritage.
Natural Beauty
Surrounded by cascading waters of the Snake River, the Temple grounds serve as a picturesque retreat. Between the 1960s and the renovation in 2011, the site featured three reflection ponds with small fish and water lilies, later transformed into vibrant flowerbeds, culminating in a contemporary waterfall feature that enhances its natural surroundings.

On September 5, 1983, a beautiful historic moment unfolded when the gold-leafed Angel Moroni was installed on the Temple via helicopter, further elevating the profile of this beautiful site.
