A Historical Journey
The journey of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple began on March 3, 1937, when it was announced to the public. The groundbreaking took place nearly a year later on December 19, 1938, led by Elder David Smith. It wasn’t until October 19, 1940, that the site was dedicated by Prophet David O. McKay, marking a significant milestone in the area.
After years of service, a major renovation began in 2015 and culminated in a rededication on June 4, 2017, led by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. The renovations introduced several updates, including an additional exit for the Bride and Groom’s room and an expanded wedding waiting area, as well as modernization of electrical systems.
Design and Structure
Covering an impressive 85,624 square feet and standing at a height of 156 feet, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was built on 8.28 acres of land. Its exterior features are particularly striking, with reinforced concrete finished in white cement. The architectural design is crowned by a single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, making it a visually stunning piece of architecture.
Interestingly, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was the first to feature a central spire and also holds the distinction of being the first Temple in Idaho, initiated under the guidance of Prophet George Albert Smith.
Interior Highlights
Inside the Temple, visitors can find four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, providing various spaces for ceremonies and observances. It is one of only seven temples where patrons pass through four ordinance rooms before reaching the Celestial Room.
