The groundbreaking for the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple took place on December 19, 1938, overseen by Elder David Smith. This marked the beginning of a transformative journey that would see the completion of one of Idaho’s most distinguished sites. The site was dedicated on October 19, 1940, by the Prophet David O. McKay, a moment that would forever etch this location in the hearts of many.
From its original name, the Idaho Falls Temple, to its current designation, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is notable for being the first of its kind in Idaho and the only one dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith. It also holds the distinction of being the first Temple designed with a central spire, rising majestically to a height of 156 feet.
Architectural Marvel
When one approaches the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple, they are greeted by an exterior faced with reinforced concrete. Finished with white cement and aggregate cast stone, the 16-inch thick walls are not only striking but also built to endure. The architectural design drew inspiration from visions of ancient Nephite Temples, culminating in a single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Inside this stunning edifice, you will find an impressive 85,624 square feet of sacred space. It features four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Notably, it was one of only seven Temples where patrons journey through four ordinance rooms before reaching the Celestial Room, joining other notable locations such as the Manti Utah Temple and the Nauvoo Illinois Temple.
Renovations and Modernization

This two-year endeavor led to the installation of a new exit for the Bride and Groom’s room and the addition of a spacious wedding waiting area. Before the 2011 landscape renovation transformed the area into a waterfall feature, the grounds had three reflection ponds filled with small fish and water lilies in the 1960s. These scenic enhancements complement the beauty of the Temple itself, making it a beloved gathering place.
