A Historical Journey
The journey of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple began on March 3, 1937, when it was announced to the public. Ground was broken just a year later, on December 19, 1938, by Elder David Smith. The site was officially dedicated by Prophet David O. McKay on October 19, 1940.
The Temple has undergone significant transformations over the years. It opened its doors for a public open house from April 22 to May 20 in 2017, following a two-year renovation. This substantial effort, which concluded with its rededication by Apostle Henry B. Eyring on June 4, 2017, introduced a range of upgrades, including an additional exit from the Bride and Groom’s room and a spacious waiting area for weddings.
Architectural Excellence
Covering an area of 85,624 square feet, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was constructed on an expansive 8.28 acres and rises to a height of 156 feet. The striking exterior features reinforced concrete with a unique white cement finish and 16-inch thick exterior walls encompassed by 2-inch thick slabs.
The architectural design is particularly noteworthy for its central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. This iconic feature adds a touch of elegance and is a defining characteristic of the Temple’s silhouette against the Idaho sky.
Unique Features and Facilities
Within its walls, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple houses four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, accommodating various religious ceremonies. The Temple’s design was inspired by a vision of the ancient Nephite Temple, imbuing it with deep historical and cultural significance.
Interestingly, it is one of only seven temples worldwide where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room, alongside notable temples in locations such as Manti, Laie, Cardston, Mesa, Los Angeles, and Nauvoo.
Landscaping and Surroundings
In the past, the Temple was adorned with three serene reflection ponds, home to small fish and water lilies. These were transformed into vibrant flowerbeds during renovations in the 1960s, and a significant landscaping upgrade in 2011 introduced a stunning waterfall feature, enhancing the Temple grounds even further.

On September 5, 1983, a helicopter was used to install the gold-leafed Angel Moroni atop the spire, marking another significant moment in its history.
