A Brief History
The story of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple began on March 3, 1937, when its construction was announced. Ground was broken on December 19, 1938, by Elder David Smith, paving the way for what would become a treasured part of this region. The dedication of the site took place on October 19, 1940, with the Prophet David O. McKay performing the ceremony. Notably, this was the first Temple built in Idaho and the only one dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith.
For many years, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple served the needs of its patrons with a design inspired by a vision of the ancient Nephite Temple. It became renowned as the first to feature a central spire, topped by the iconic gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue.
Architectural Marvel
Spanning 85,624 square feet, the Temple is constructed using reinforced concrete and an exterior finish of white cement cast stone. Its exterior walls are 16 inches thick, and the towering height of 156 feet adds to its striking presence against the sky. A significant feature is the single attached central spire which gleams in the sunlight, drawing the eyes of all who pass by.
Inside, the Temple comprises four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all contributing to the experience of those seeking sacred ordinances. Notably, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is one of only seven temples where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room—an aspect shared with the Manti Utah, Laie Hawaii, Cardston Alberta, Mesa Arizona, Los Angeles California, and Nauvoo Illinois Temples.
Renovations and Features
The Temple underwent a major renovation that took two years, culminating in its rededication on June 4, 2017, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. This substantial renovation included the addition of an extra exit for the Bride and Groom’s room, as well as a spacious wedding waiting area. The enhancements also brought about updates to electrical systems and other practical elements, ensuring that the venue remains functional for years to come.
One of the most notable past features was the presence of reflection ponds surrounded by water lilies and small fish in the 1960s. However, these have since been transformed into beautiful flowerbeds, and a captivating waterfall feature was incorporated during the significant landscaping updates of 2011.
