A Journey Through History
The announcement for the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was made on March 3, 1937, marking the beginning of a significant chapter for the area. The ceremonial groundbreaking took place on December 19, 1938, led by Elder David Smith. Just two years later, on October 19, 1940, the Prophet David O. McKay dedicated the site, firmly establishing its foundational role in the region.
The exterior was completed in 1941, but due to World War II, the interior work took an additional four years. It finally opened, much to the anticipation of the community.
Architectural Marvel
Spanning 85,624 square feet and standing 156 feet tall, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is not just a prominent figure in the skyline but also a thoughtfully designed space. Its exterior features reinforced concrete adorned with white cement from aggregate cast stone, ensuring durability and elegance with walls 16 inches thick.
One of the most striking elements is the single attached central spire, crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. This architectural feature plays a crucial role in the Temple’s aesthetic appeal and historical significance, as it was the first Temple to adopt such a design.
Renovations and Modern Updates
In recent years, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple underwent a significant renovation, with an open house held from April 22 to May 20, 2017. The updates included the addition of an exit for the Bride and Groom’s room and a spacious wedding waiting area. The rededication ceremony took place on June 4, 2017, officiated by Apostle Henry B. Eyring, wrapping up a two-year renovation that modernized various electrical and system features.
Unique Features
This Temple is notable for housing four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry. An interesting aspect of its design is how, during its construction, excavators discovered large lave rocks, which became integral to the basement walls.
In the past, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple featured three reflection ponds filled with small fish and water lilies; however, these were transformed into flowerbeds in the 1960s, leading to a major landscaping renovation in 2011 that introduced a dramatic waterfall feature.
Notably, it is one of the few Temples where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room. This unique design is shared with only six other Temples, including the iconic Manti Utah Temple and the Laie Hawaii Temple.

The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple holds the distinction of being the first Temple built in Idaho and the only one dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith.
