Located at 1000 Memorial Dr, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is a remarkable site with a rich history and unique architectural features. This Temple holds a significant place in the hearts of many, being the first constructed in Idaho.
Historical Highlights
The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was announced on March 3, 1937, marking the beginning of a notable journey. Groundbreaking took place on December 19, 1938, under the direction of Elder David Smith. After years of dedicated work, the site was officially dedicated on October 19, 1940, by the Prophet David O. McKay.
An extensive renovation was completed with a public open house held from April 22 to May 20, 2017, followed by a rededication led by Apostle Henry B. Eyring on June 4, 2017. This renovation spanned two years and introduced several improvements, including an additional exit for the Bride and Groom’s room and a spacious wedding waiting area.
Architectural Features
Built on 8.28 acres, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple covers an area of 85,624 square feet and stands tall at a height of 156 feet. Its exterior is finished with reinforced concrete and white cement aggregate cast stone, featuring walls that are 16 inches thick backed by two-inch thick slabs. Notably, the design incorporates a single central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, making it instantly recognizable.
Inside, the Temple houses four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, providing essential spaces for various ceremonial functions. Uniquely, it is one of just seven Temples where individuals progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room.
Natural Beauty
Situated on the banks of the Snake River, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple offers stunning views of the cascading waters nearby. In the 1960s, three reflection ponds once adorned the grounds, home to small fish and water lilies. Today, the landscape features a beautiful waterfall, revamped during a major landscaping renovation in 2011.
Cultural Significance
This Temple was the very first to be dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith and was also the first to showcase a central spire. The architectural design draws inspiration from a vision of the ancient Nephite Temple, embodying a blend of spiritual purpose and artistic expression. In an archaeological twist, large lava rocks discovered during excavation were utilized for the basement walls, marrying nature and construction in a distinctive way.
Fun facts include the unique history of the Angel Moroni statue, which was installed on September 5, 1983, using a helicopter for its elevation.
