Exciting Details for the Salt Lake Temple Open House

The Salt Lake Temple is set to reopen its doors with a highly anticipated open house scheduled from April 5 to October 1, 2027. After years of extensive renovations and seismic upgrades since its closure on January 1, 2020, visitors will have a unique opportunity to explore this iconic building situated in the heart of Salt Lake City.

In anticipation of this grand reopening, millions are expected to visit Temple Square during this extensive public open house. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is preparing for what promises to be one of the most substantial visitor experiences ever offered. Estimates suggest that between 3 million to 5 million guests will participate in this long-awaited celebration, averaging about 20,000 to 29,000 visitors each day over the six-month period.

Planning for the Crowds

To accommodate the influx of visitors, the city and the Church are working collaboratively to manage crowds effectively. Strategies are being developed to ensure that the experience remains enjoyable for all. Given the historical significance and past visitor numbers—such as an estimated 70,000 attendees daily during the 2002 Olympics—it’s evident that the open house will draw significant attention.

Ticketing and Transportation

In late August or early September 2026, the Church plans to launch an app allowing guests to book their tour times. Visitors can also utilize UTA public transportation options, including TRAX, Frontrunner, and buses, to navigate downtown. Additionally, a park-and-ride lot will be available at South Temple and Redwood Road, complete with shuttle service to Temple Square. Employees will be provided with free UTA passes to reduce downtown traffic, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Tour Experience

The guided tours will begin at the Church’s Conference Center and proceed underground to the Temple itself. The tours will last approximately 60 to 80 minutes, offering a comprehensive view of the renovations and updates made throughout the building. Special missionaries will be recruited to serve as docents during the open house, providing insights and enhancing the tour experience.

Once visitors enter the perimeter, they will have access to not only the Temple but also the surrounding grounds, which include new statues and additional Church buildings. The entire visit can last several hours, ensuring a fulfilling experience for all.

Additional Events

In the coming months, the Church will set up Easter displays and will host its semi-annual general conference in April and October. Prior to the public open house, nearby businesses and local residents will be invited for exclusive tours in March 2027, ensuring a thorough introduction to the newly renovated Temple.

This monumental event marks the return of public access to the Salt Lake Temple after more than 130 years, and anticipation is building rapidly. As preparations unfold, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. Stay tuned for more updates as the open house dates approach!
