The Indianapolis Indiana Temple is a truly beautiful and significant landmark in the state, officially announced on October 2, 2010. As the very first temple built in Indiana, it holds a special place in the hearts of many in the community, offering a space for worship, reflection, and connection.
This impressive structure covers 34,000 square feet and stands at a height of 106.4 feet, elevated at 849 feet above sea level. It reaches toward the sky, featuring a striking single attached end tower topped with a stunning gold-leafed angel Moroni statue. The temple’s architectural design is inspired by some of the most iconic monuments in downtown Indianapolis, like the Indiana World War Memorial and the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, creating a harmonious blend of history and spirituality.
The ground was broken for the temple on September 29, 2012, during a ceremony led by Elder Donald L. Hallstrom of the Presidency of the Seventy. Excitement built in the community as the temple took shape, leading to its public open house from July 17 to August 8, 2015. This was a wonderful opportunity for locals to explore this sacred space before it was dedicated by Apostle Henry B. Eyring on August 23, 2015.
Inside, the temple is designed to feel warm and welcoming. It includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all crafted to provide a peaceful environment for worship. One of the standout features is the beautiful stained glass windows, which showcase a lovely motif of intertwining Celtic knots and floral designs. These designs honor the tulip poplar, Indiana’s state tree, and fill the interior with a soft, uplifting glow in shades of blue and warm tones.
Constructed with care, the temple uses sturdy materials such as structural steel and concrete, with a stunning finish of Aero Cream Limestone quarried in Myra, Turkey. The lush landscaping around the temple enhances its charm, featuring a variety of plants and trees native to Indiana, making it a lovely spot to reflect and connect with nature.
As you explore the interior, you’ll encounter luxurious flooring made from Perlatino, Sahara Beige, and Arctic Grey marble, which adds an elegant touch throughout the temple. The use of rich cherry wood from the eastern United States contributes warmth to the space, making it feel inviting. Intricate carvings throughout the building depict meaningful symbols like Celtic knots, the circle within a square, and the tulip poplar blossom, all adding depth and character to the temple’s ambiance.
