Nestled in the heart of the Midwest, the Kansas City Missouri Temple stands as a beacon of faith and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Latter-day Saints. Its rich history stretches back to the 1830s when early Saints dedicated a site for a temple in Independence, Missouri, in 1831 followed by another site in Far West in 1838. Unfortunately, these ambitious plans were halted due to the unfortunate persecution faced by the Saints, including the infamous extermination order issued by Governor Lilburn W. Boggs.
Fast forward to the turn of the century: as Church membership began to flourish once more, the first stake was established in Kansas City in 1956. By 2008, the regions of Kansas and Missouri had seen the membership grow to an impressive 100,000 members across 21 stakes, reigniting the dream of a temple in the area.
The Kansas City Missouri Temple, built on an expansive 8.05 acres, officially broke ground on May 8, 2010, led by Elder Ronald A. Rasband. This remarkable structure features striking architectural elements, including two stunning end spires topped with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni. The temple’s exterior is crafted from precast concrete, which exudes a sense of permanence and beauty. Spanning 32,000 square feet and reaching a height of 150 feet, the temple is a significant addition to Kansas City’s skyline, perched at an elevation of 875 feet.
Inside, visitors will find two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry, each designed to serve the spiritual needs of the community. The interior showcases white oak harvested from Adam-ondi-Ahman, connecting the temple to the rich history of the early Saints.
The temple was dedicated on May 6, 2012, in a deeply spiritual ceremony led by President Thomas S. Monson. During his remarks, he reflected on the historical significance of the area, recognizing it as a place where the Prophet Joseph Smith walked and where pivotal moments in the restoration of the gospel occurred. Attendees felt a profound spirit as they honored the sacrifices of the early Saints whom the temple is dedicated to.
The Kansas City Missouri Temple is the second temple in Missouri, following the St. Louis Missouri Temple, which was completed in 1997. However, its story is unique, as it finds its roots in a long history of aspirations that began over 180 years ago.
Inviting Grounds and Community Connection
The temple isn’t just a building; it’s surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds filled with vibrant flowers and trees, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and the community. Nearly 91,000 people toured the temple during its open house, showcasing the deep interest and connection people have with this significant site.
President Monson announced the plan for the temple during the October 2008 General Conference, and the excitement surrounding its construction has only deepened the bonds within the greater Kansas City community.
