The Las Vegas Nevada Temple was announced to the public on April 7, 1984, by President Gordon B. Hinckley. The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on November 30, 1985, with notable participation from Church leaders. A public open house took place from November 16, 1989, to December 9, 1989, drawing an astonishing 297,480 attendees. The dedication, conducted by President Hinckley over a three-day period from December 16 to December 18, 1989, was preceded by a heartfelt quote from him: “This is the house of the Lord, where we seek the Eternal.”
Architectural Features
The design of the Las Vegas Nevada Temple showcases a beautiful harmony with its surroundings. The exterior features striking white precast stone walls complemented by a rich copper roof and detailing. Its six attached spires gracefully rise above the landscape, with the angel Moroni statue positioned to face east, symbolically heralding the Second Coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Spanning 10.3 acres and 80,350 square feet, this three-level Temple stands 137 feet tall at an elevation of 1,946 feet.
Interior Design Elements
Inside, the Temple is equally captivating. It houses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all designed with intricate attention to detail. A prominent desert-scape mural adorns the marriage waiting room, featuring desert lilies embedded in the precast concrete exterior and surrounded by stunning stained-glass windows. The Celestial Room, a focal point of the Temple, dazzles with natural light streaming through breathtaking floor-to-ceiling windows. The room boasts two massive chandeliers crafted by Preciosa, each holding thousands of pieces of cut crystal.
Community Engagement and Legacy
The Las Vegas Nevada Temple marked significant milestones as the first Temple built in Clark County and the entire state of Nevada. Following the announcement, members of the Temple district enthusiastically raised $11 million to assist with construction, achieving 428 percent of their assessment. Over six thousand members attended the groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center downtown, which included a special videotaped presentation by Church leaders.
Ongoing Contributions
In 2012, a family history center opened within the building that once housed a Distribution Services center, further enriching the resources available to the local populace. Additionally, the Las Vegas Nevada Temple became a cherished gift during the holiday season, being dedicated just before Christmas and attended by the entire First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles.
