The story of the Las Vegas Nevada Temple began on April 7, 1984, when it was announced to the public by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Following this announcement, the community eagerly anticipated the groundbreaking and site dedication, which took place on November 30, 1985, led by an Apostle of the faith.

A public open house ran from November 16, 1989, to December 9, 1989, attracting an impressive total of 297,480 attendees. The dedication occurred from December 16 to December 18, 1989, also led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who remarked, “This Temple is a gift to the Lord.” The Las Vegas Nevada Temple occupies 10.3 acres, showcasing a beautifully designed exterior of white precast stone alongside copper roofing and detailing.

Architectural Features

The Temple is a three-level facility, encompassing a total of 80,350 square feet and reaching a height of 137 feet. The remarkable six spires are capped with an angel Moroni statue that faces east, symbolically heralding the anticipation of Christ’s return. The exquisite exterior art glass features geometric, Art Deco-inspired patterns that harmonize with the surrounding desert scenery.

A spectacular focal point within the Temple is the Celestial Room, renowned for its breathtaking floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to stream in, casting miniature rainbows around the space. The room also features two impressive chandeliers, each 10 feet high and 8 feet wide, adorned with thousands of cut crystals, designed by Preciosa.

Additional Spaces Within the Temple

Inside, the Las Vegas Nevada Temple hosts four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistry, creating a space for various gatherings. The inviting atmosphere is further enhanced by prominent art pieces, including a notable desert-scape mural in the marriage waiting room that integrates desert lilies into the exterior design.

Community Involvement and Support

Upon the announcement of the Temple, local members eagerly contributed funds, raising an outstanding $11 million—over 428% of their assessment. Over six thousand people attended the groundbreaking ceremony held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, marking the occasion with a presentation that illustrated the construction site and featured distinguished guests.

A Growing Legacy

In 2012, the Las Vegas Nevada Temple expanded its offerings by opening a family history center within the area that previously served as a Distribution Services center. This addition reflects the ongoing growth and commitment to the spiritual needs of the community.

The Las Vegas Nevada Temple is the first Temple in Las Vegas, Clark County, and the state of Nevada, emphasizing its integral role in the region. Dedicated in eleven sessions just before Christmas, the Temple stands as a cherished testament to faith, aligning beautifully with the spirit of the holiday season.

As a continuous source of inspiration and peace, the Las Vegas Nevada Temple remains a vital aspect of the area’s heritage and provides a tranquil space for reflection and understanding amid the vibrant energy of the city.
