Latest News on the Provo Utah Rock Temple

In his closing remarks during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced the Provo Utah Temple would undergo a major transformation, with demolition and reconstruction set to begin after the Orem Utah Temple’s dedication. The existing temple will officially close on February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work. Members in the area are encouraged to use nearby temples during this time and to schedule appointments for personal ordinances.

The new temple will be named the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, located on Provo’s east bench at the mouth of Rock Canyon, featuring a stunning mountain backdrop. The 17-acre grounds will have a cascading water feature, surrounded by a variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees. The Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) is nearby, contributing to the area’s spirit of dedication.

The temple will cover approximately 163,000 square feet, including six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries. Its renaming to the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple on February 20, 2024, emphasizes its geographical significance, with the old structure closing and being demolished on February 24, 2024. Reconstruction is underway, with completion expected by late 2027. The new design will blend contemporary and traditional styles with elegant arched windows and a multi-level tower topped by a golden spire.

Meeting current seismic codes, the new temple will also incorporate energy-efficient systems to support sustainability. A distinct feature of the design will be three grand white arches at the main entrance, offering a warm welcome. The exterior materials are being updated to modern standards, while the iconic Angel Moroni statue will not be included.

The extensive grounds will feature a mix of hardscaping and landscaping, utilizing native, drought-tolerant plants for environmental stewardship and year-round interest. Water features will be included, surrounded by plants that thrive in moist environments, creating a serene atmosphere. The temple will also have manicured gardens and symmetrical walkways, enhancing the spiritual experience for all visitors.

As it develops, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple aims to be a welcoming sanctuary that reflects its beautiful surroundings and the values of its visitors, embodying modern design, sustainability, and spiritual significance.
