The Mesa Arizona Temple is an enchanting place filled with history and beauty! Imagine this: it was announced on October 3, 2019, but its story dates back even further. The site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, marking the beginning of a beloved landmark in the heart of Mesa. Fast forward a bit, and the temple’s groundbreaking took place on April 25, 1922. Just a few years later, from October 23 to 26 in 1927, it was officially dedicated—also by Heber J. Grant!
In more recent years, the temple shimmered once again with a spectacular rededication on April 15 and 16, 1975, led by Spencer W. Kimball. And who can forget the joy of the public open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, which culminated in a rededication on December 12, 2021, by Dallin H. Oaks? What an exciting time for the community!
Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple is a feast for the eyes! Its flat roof and sculpted friezes give it a distinct look that stands out against the desert sky. Step inside, and you’ll find four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery, all beautifully spread over 75,000 square feet. Standing tall at 53 feet and perched at an elevation of 1,240 feet, this temple really makes a statement! And with its stunning exterior, crafted from concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel and wrapped in eggshell colored terra cotta tiles, it’s no wonder many people are drawn to its beauty.
Nestled just east of the original Mesa Townsite—settled by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints—this temple anchors a vibrant historic district that retains its charming, residential character. The grounds themselves are a peaceful oasis, featuring a delightful cactus garden and expansive reflection pools. Come Easter, the temple comes alive with visitors flocking to see “Jesus the Christ,” the largest outdoor Easter pageant in the world—it’s an experience not to be missed! And during the Christmas season, the grounds transform into a magical wonderland filled with thousands of twinkling lights and a heartwarming Nativity display.

Originally known simply as the Arizona Temple, it was the first to open its doors to the public for an open house before the rededication—a truly groundbreaking event!
The temple hasn’t just stood still; it has evolved beautifully over the years. After closing in February 1974 for a major remodeling, it reopened with fantastic upgrades. More recently, it closed on May 19, 2018, for a threeandahalfyear renovation that brought new life to its historic charm—think updated roofing, modernized mechanical systems, and even new furniture, all while preserving the breathtaking murals that tell its story.
