In his closing remarks during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced that the Provo Utah Temple will undergo a major transformation through demolition and reconstruction after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. The existing temple will close on Saturday, February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work and paving the way for a new facility. Members are encouraged to utilize nearby temples during this period and to make appointments for their personal ordinances.
The new temple, called the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, will be located on Provo’s east bench at the mouth of Rock Canyon, surrounded by picturesque mountains. The temple will feature a cascading water feature and a diverse array of landscaping that celebrates the area’s natural beauty. Just across the street is the Provo Missionary Training Center, contributing a spirit of dedication to the locale.
The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will cover approximately 163,000 square feet across a 17-acre site and will include six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, all designed for an inviting experience.
Renamed on February 20, 2024, the temple’s original structure was closed on February 24, 2024, and is currently being demolished. The anticipated completion of the new temple is set for late 2027. It will incorporate a mix of traditional and contemporary architecture, featuring long arched windows and a multi-level tower with a golden spire, marking a departure from the mid-century modern style of the original temple.
The new construction will meet current seismic codes for safety and resilience, and it will include energy-efficient systems, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.
A notable aspect of the design is the three grand white arches at the entrance, welcoming visitors. The exterior will align with modern construction standards, with waterproof sheathing boards being attached as part of the ongoing work. Notably, the new temple will not feature the Angel Moroni statue atop its spire.
The extensive grounds will blend hardscaping with natural beauty, featuring concrete curbing, sidewalks, and an oval-shaped design at key intersections. The landscaping will focus on native, drought-tolerant plants to support sustainability and ensure year-round interest.
The design will likely include serene water features surrounded by plants that thrive in moist environments, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere. Like many other temples, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will feature manicured gardens and symmetrical walkways, creating a balanced spiritual environment.
