The Bountiful Utah Temple, the 47th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is a prominent feature in picturesque Bountiful, Utah. Located at 640 S Bountiful Blvd, Bountiful, Utah 84010, it has deeply enriched the area since its inception.
A Historical Overview
The journey to its completion began on February 2, 1990, when the Temple was announced to the public. After two years of anticipation, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 2, 1992, presided over by the Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. This event drew a considerable crowd, with 7,500 attendees present at the site and an additional 2,500 joining remotely.
Following years of construction, the public open house ran from November 4 to December 17, 1994, during which an impressive 870,361 individuals toured the Temple. The efforts of the 45,000 volunteers who contributed to this effort cannot be overstated; their hard work and dedication significantly aided in preparing the space for its future purpose.
Dedication came next, conducted by Prophet Howard W. Hunter from January 8 to January 14, 1995. Remarkably, it took 28 dedicatory sessions to accommodate the 201,655 people who gathered to witness the dedication.
Architectural Highlights
Covering approximately 104,000 square feet, the Bountiful Utah Temple is distinguished by its striking exterior, made of Bethel white granite. A central spire adorned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue adds to its grandeur, standing tall at 176 feet at an elevation of 5,160 feet. Nestled among the foothills, it is positioned on the east bench, providing stunning views of both the Great Salt Lake and the city below.
The Temple is built on 9 acres and features a two-story parking garage, easily accessed from the west side of the grounds. This well-planned layout ensures streamlined access for those visiting.
Facilities Within
Inside, the Bountiful Utah Temple contains four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a single baptistry, creating an accommodating space for various needs. While it shares a floor plan with the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, the surrounding grounds offer unique characteristics, enhancing its individual charm.
Notable Events and Features
An interesting historical note: on May 22, 2016, the Angel Moroni statue was struck by lightning and was subsequently replaced on June 1, 2016. Originally intended for the Meridian Idaho Temple, this particular statue now graces the Bountiful Utah Temple.
