We are pleased to announce that the Harare Zimbabwe Temple was officially announced on April 3, 2016, during the 186th Annual General Conference by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This significant announcement marked the beginning of an important journey toward establishing a dedicated place of Temple Work within Zimbabwe.
On December 12, 2020, the groundbreaking ceremony took place with Elder Edward Dube, a respected native of Zimbabwe and 1st Counselor in the African South Area Presidency, leading the event. His remarks, delivered with great conviction, expressed a heartfelt desire for the building’s construction to inspire all to turn their hearts to our Savior, Jesus Christ. The presence of President Mnangagwa at the ceremony further underscored the importance of this Temple, as he commended the Church for its invaluable contributions to national development and the well-being of the Zimbabwean people. At the groundbreaking ceremony was President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, was also in attendance. President Mnangagwa praised the Church in his remarks, saying, “The contribution of the Church to national development and social well being of the citizenry cannot be overemphasized.”
The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will open for public tours from January 22 to February 7, 2026, providing a unique opportunity for community members to experience this remarkable new addition. The temple will be located at 65 Enterprise Road, Highlands, Harare, spanning 6.7 acres. It boasts a height of 103 feet 4 inches and features a single attached end spire, though it does not include a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. The interior encompasses two Instruction Rooms, two Sealing Rooms, and one baptistry, totaling an expansive 17,247 square feet.
The architectural rendering of the temple was unveiled on October 1, 2020, generating considerable excitement throughout the community. The establishment of this temple is especially significant, as it alleviates the long journey of 13 hours that members previously faced when traveling to the Johannesburg South African Temple. The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will be the first temple in Zimbabwe and the eighth in Africa, marking a pivotal achievement for the local membership, which consists of approximately 26,000 individuals, organized into six stakes and two districts.
Furthermore, the visit by Prophet Russell M. Nelson to the temple site on April 17, 2018, during his tour was a momentous occasion, further enhancing the anticipation surrounding this Temple. The Harare Zimbabwe Temple represents not only a place of Temple Work but also a symbol of hope, unity, and spiritual growth for the community at large. We look forward to witnessing the Open House and dedication of this significant temple, knowing it will profoundly impact the lives of many for generations to come.
