Cleveland Ohio Temple: A New Era for the Faithful
The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently unveiled significant dates related to the Cleveland Ohio Temple, marking an exciting chapter in the faith’s history in the region.
A media day is set for Monday, June 15, 2026, followed by private tours for invited guests on June 16 and 17. The public open house will take place from June 18 through July 3, 2026, with the exception of Sundays. Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside over the dedication ceremony on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., with a rebroadcast scheduled for 2:00 p.m. This dedicatory session will be broadcast to all units within the Cleveland Ohio Temple district.
The announcement of the Cleveland Ohio Temple was made by President Russell M. Nelson in April 2022. He expressed an urgent call to prioritize eternal blessings offered through temple experiences, urging members, “I plead with you to counter worldly ways by focusing on the eternal blessings of the temple. Your time there brings blessings for eternity.”
Ohio currently boasts nearly 66,000 Latter-day Saints spread across almost 130 congregations, making the Cleveland Ohio Temple the second dedicated house of the Lord in the state, following the Columbus Ohio Temple, which was dedicated in 1999. An additional Cincinnati Ohio Temple was announced in April 2024.
Importantly, Ohio has been a pivotal location for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since its inception. The Kirtland Temple, the Church’s first house of the Lord, was constructed there. The Community of Christ, which had been preserving the Kirtland Temple since the 1830s, transferred stewardship of the building to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in March 2024. Conveniently, the Kirtland Temple is situated just a short distance from the newly established Cleveland Ohio Temple.
Latter-day Saints regard each Temple as a house of the Lord, recognized as the most sacred locations on earth. These sites differ from local meetinghouses where congregational services are held. While all individuals are encouraged to attend Sunday services and weekday activities at these meetinghouses, the primary functions of Temples focus on sacred ceremonies. These include marriages that unite families for eternity and proxy baptisms conducted on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the chance to receive these blessings during their lifetime.
As the Cleveland Ohio Temple nears its open house and dedication dates, anticipation grows among the faithful community, signaling a new era rich in spiritual opportunities and connections.
