The journey to establishing the Lubbock Texas Temple began on April 2, 2000, when it was announced to the public by the Prophet during General Conference. Shortly thereafter, on November 4, 2000, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place, presided over by Elder Rex D. Pinegar. On that momentous day, he expressed that this Temple would be a reflection of “home,” a place to feel love, counsel, and belonging.
The public open house ran from March 23 to March 30, 2002, allowing many to appreciate the unique features of the building before its official dedication. On April 21, 2002, the Temple was dedicated by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Highlights
Covering 2.7 acres, the Lubbock Texas Temple features an exterior finish of Empress white and majestic gray granite quarried in China. The Temple’s architectural design includes a single attached end spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Inside, visitors will find two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The building spans an impressive 16,498 square feet. Notably, it is a single-story Temple and is the first of its kind in both the city of Lubbock and Lubbock County, making it the third Temple built in Texas, following the Dallas Texas Temple in 1984 and the Houston Texas Temple in 2000. The ground was broken for the Lubbock Texas Temple on the same day as the Monterrey Mexico Temple, which was dedicated a week later by President Gordon B. Hinckley.
Stunning Interior and Exterior Features
The Temple’s exterior is adorned with elegant stained glass, notably in the tall arched windows, which feature symbolic rays of light radiating outward from a central sun. This design beautifully interacts with sunlight, adding to the visual splendor of the granite exterior.
Inside, the artistic elements are equally captivating. The interior art showcases a blend of original oil paintings and watercolor-style prints depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the surrounding West Texas landscape. Texas flora, including the bluebonnet, is often incorporated into these scenic artworks.
Lighting and Doors
The interior light fixtures feature elegant crystal chandeliers and sconces, crafted from a mix of crystal, bronze, and acrylic elements, enhancing the gracefulness of the interior ambiance. The doors also reflect high craftsmanship; the interior doors are predominantly made of light-colored wood, boasting hand-carved floral and wheat motifs, symbolizing the “bread of life.”
The exterior entrance doors feature rich, heavy dark wood, complemented by ornate paneling and polished brass hardware, ensuring a welcoming yet elegant entryway.
