The Manti Utah Temple is the third temple dedicated and currently in operation within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located at 200 E 510 N, Manti, Utah 84642, this architectural marvel holds significant historical and cultural importance within the region.
Timeline of Events
The inception of the Manti Utah Temple began with its announcement on June 25, 1875. The groundbreaking and dedication of the land happened on April 25, 1877, led by the Prophet Brigham Young. Over the years, this House of the Lord has undergone various renovations, leading to several public dedications and open houses. The most recent open house took place from March 14 to April 5, 2024, followed by its latest dedication on April 21, 2024, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson.
Architectural Features
The Manti Utah Temple is situated on 27 acres, strategically placed on a rising knoll known as “Temple Hill.” This location offers a stunning view of the Sanpete Valley, with a height of 179 feet and an elevation of 5,657 feet. The temple’s exterior is made from fine-textured cream-colored oolite limestone, sourced from the very area where the House of the Lord stands today.
Unique Design Elements
The design of the Manti Utah Temple features two attached towers, which notably do not include a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. Inside, the temple comprises four instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Among its striking architectural elements are twin self-supporting, open-centered spiral staircases that wind five stories high on both octagonal towers. These staircases are celebrated as an engineering marvel due to the seamless craftsmanship that ensures no joints are visible in the walnut handrailings.
Historical Events
One of the notable events in the temple’s history occurred in 1928, when a lightning strike caused a fire in the east tower, burning for three hours. Despite challenges over the years, the temple continues to be a place of significance for many.
Interior Artwork and Changes
The interior of the Manti Utah Temple showcases beautiful painted murals in various rooms, including the Creation Room, Garden Room, and World Room. The Terrestrial Room and Celestial Room, however, are free of murals. The House of the Lord previously featured a live endowment for 133 years, ceasing on October 2, 2021, following renovations.
The large arching tunnel under the east tower, which has since been closed, allowed vehicles to pass through from one side to the other. This arch can still be seen when entering via the sealing rooms.
The original name of the temple was simply the Manti Temple, and interestingly, it does not bear a sign indicating its name, allowing the beauty of its architecture to speak for itself.
