LDS Temple News Ogden Utah Temple

The Ogden Utah Temple stands proudly as the 14th dedicated temple in operation, a symbol of faith and community. Its journey began with a powerful announcement on August 24, 1967, igniting enthusiasm in the hearts of many. The first site dedication on September 8, 1969, led by Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer, marked a monumental step forward in bringing this sacred space to life.

On the very same day, Hugh B. Brown conducted the groundbreaking ceremony, setting the stage for what would become a revered place of worship. After years of anticipation, the temple welcomed 181,000 guests during its public open house from December 16-30, 1971—an overwhelming response that showcased its significance.

The official dedication, held from January 18-20, 1972, by Joseph Fielding Smith, firmly established the temple as a cornerstone of the community. The excitement continued with a second open house from August 1 through September 6, 2014, culminating in a rededication on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, further affirming its vital role in the lives of many.

Situated on 9.96 acres in the heart of downtown Ogden, the temple features an exquisite exterior crafted from granite quarried and fabricated in China. Its striking architectural design, highlighted by a central spire crowned with a gold-leafed angel Moroni, commands attention and admiration. Inside, the temple boasts six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all within an impressive 112,232 square feet—a true haven for worship and reflection.

Reaching a height of 188 feet and 8 inches, the temple is perched at an elevation of 4,299 feet, creating a breathtaking silhouette against the sky. The meticulously manicured grounds, complete with stunning water features and beautiful trees, provide a serene atmosphere for visitors and worshippers alike.

Notably, the Ogden Utah Temple is the fifth temple built in Utah and holds the distinction of being the first dedicated in the state—80 years after the prior four were established when Utah was still a territory. A poignant moment during its dedication occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee graciously completed the dedicatory prayer when Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith became too weak to continue, reflecting the spirit of unity and perseverance.
