The announcement of the Elko Temple took place on April 4, 2021, when Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared the news during a General Conference. Following this, the groundbreaking and dedication of the House of the Lord occurred on May 7, 2022, led by Paul B. Pieper.

Public access was offered through an open house from August 30, 2025, to September 13, 2025, allowing people to experience the space before its formal dedication. The Elko Nevada Temple was dedicated on October 12, 2025, by Apostle Gary E. Stevenson, who offered a dedicatory prayer expressing the hope that the temple would serve as a source of light and peace for all who see it.

Design Elements

Built on 5.2 acres, the temple features a striking exterior made of White Mount Airy Granite stone veneer, complemented by a single attached end spire without a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. The architectural design reflects the surrounding natural beauty and the spirit of Northern Nevada.

Interior Art

The interior showcases original artwork from several notable artists. Among these, three primary landscape paintings are featured: “Lamoille Canyon” by Michael Coleman, “Elko Landscape” by David Dibble, and “Autumn Sun — Ruby Mountains” by Louis Heinzman. Additionally, sacred art pieces by Michael Malm, Albin Veselka, and Jeff Hein further enrich the spiritual atmosphere of the House of the Lord.

Unique Features

The glass art integrated into the temple features motifs inspired by the desert globemallow and employs vibrant colors that reflect the high-desert landscape. The design also incorporates geometric patterns influenced by the Paiute and Shoshone tribes, adding a cultural richness to the overall aesthetic.

Materials and Finishes

The interior light fixtures are crafted from brass with frosted glass, lending a warm glow to the spaces. The doors, both interior and exterior, are made of sapele wood and brass, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. Additionally, the railings around the baptismal font also utilize brass, creating a cohesive design throughout the House of the Lord.

Layout and Dimensions

With a total area of 12,901 square feet, the Elko Nevada Temple is constructed as a single story. It stands at a height of 108.10 feet and is situated at an elevation of 5,133 feet. Inside, it includes one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry, catering to various spiritual needs.

Community Impact

The Elko Nevada Temple serves as an important spiritual center for residents across six large counties, covering approximately 46.5% of the state’s area, or 51,389 square miles. This dedication marks a notable event as it is the first house of the Lord dedicated during a period of apostolic interregnum since 1888.

As the first temple in both the city of Elko and Elko County, as well as the third in the state of Nevada, the Elko Nevada Temple represents a significant milestone for the region, and it continues to touch the lives of those who seek spiritual growth and enlightenment.
