History and Construction
The journey of the Gilbert Arizona Temple began when it was announced to the public on April 26, 2008, by the Prophet during the General Conference. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on November 13, 2010, with Elder Claudio R.M. Costa presiding over the event. Following several years of meticulous work, a public open house unfolded from January 18 through February 15, 2014, attracting a remarkable 407,020 attendees who had the opportunity to explore the beautifully designed interior and exterior.
The dedication of the Temple occurred on March 2, 2014, which was led by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, though the dedicatory prayer was read by Henry B. Eyring. This five-level Temple is built on a generous 15.38 acres and boasts an impressive footprint of 85,326 square feet, reaching a height of 195 feet at its tallest point.
Architectural Features
The architectural details of the Gilbert Arizona Temple are particularly noteworthy. The exterior is adorned with precast concrete panels, and a single attached end spire is topped with a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, which found its place on May 15, 2012.
The artistic elements enhance the overall ambiance. The interior features breathtaking, highly detailed art glass, inspired by the native Sonoran Desert landscape, particularly emphasizing the agave plant and its flowers. Renowned artists contributed to this artistic expression, including:
- Alan Fullmer: Known for his panoramic works combining photography and oil painting.
- Anne Bradham: Celebrated for impressionistic watercolor scenes.
- Robert A. Boyd: Creator of the “Time and All Eternity Series.”
- Katauna Davis: Expert in precision-focused watercolor pieces.
Interior Design
Within the Temple, intricate design continues with chandeliers and light fixtures manufactured by Swarovski Architectural Lighting. These fixtures creatively incorporate the native agave plant and flower design, resonating with themes of life and growth.
The interior doors are crafted from white oak, complemented by bronze hardware. The exterior doors also feature bronze, ensuring a harmonious aesthetic throughout. Notably, the railings surrounding the baptismal font are made from bronze, further enhancing the elegant design of the space.
