A Brief History
The journey toward the completion of the Gilbert Arizona Temple began on April 26, 2008, when the announcement was made. The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on November 13, 2010, led by Elder Claudio R.M. Costa. This event marked the commencement of an inspiring construction phase.
Following years of dedication and hard work, the doors opened to the public during an open house from January 18 to February 15, 2014. This event saw an impressive attendance of 407,020 individuals, showcasing a great deal of interest and anticipation surrounding the Temple’s completion.
Dedication and Features
The official dedication took place on March 2, 2014, with the Prophet Thomas S. Monson presiding over the ceremony, while Henry B. Eyring read the dedicatory prayer. This event further solidified the importance of the Temple within the area.
Covering 85,326 square feet and sitting on a generous 15.38 acres, the Gilbert Arizona Temple features a striking exterior finish of precast concrete panels. One of its most distinctive architectural elements is the single attached central spire that reaches an impressive height of 195 feet, crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, which was placed on May 15, 2012.
Inside, the Temple includes three instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, designed to accommodate various rites and ceremonies.
