We are pleased to announce significant developments regarding the Harare Zimbabwe Temple. The temple was officially announced on April 3, 2016, during the 186th Annual General Conference by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This moment marked the beginning of a meaningful endeavor to establish a dedicated place of Temple Work and community service in Zimbabwe.
On December 12, 2020, the groundbreaking ceremony took place, led by Elder Edward Dube, a respected native of Zimbabwe and 1st Counselor in the African South Area Presidency. Elder Dube emphasized the significance of this Temple with his words: “As we watch the rising of this building from the ground up, may we also turn our hearts upward to Thee and Thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.” Additionally, the attendance of President Mnangagwa underscored the importance of this initiative, as he acknowledged the Church’s contributions to national development and the well-being of its citizens. At the groundbreaking ceremony was President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, was also in attendance. President Mnangagwa praised the Church in his remarks, saying, “The contribution of the Church to national development and social well being of the citizenry cannot be overemphasized.”
The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will host a Public Open House from January 22 to February 7, 2026. This event presents a valuable opportunity for community members and stakeholders to explore this esteemed addition to our society. The temple is located at 65 Enterprise Road, Highlands, Harare, and occupies an area of 6.7 acres. It stands at a height of 103 feet 4 inches, featuring a single attached end spire without a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Inside, the facility will include two Instruction Rooms, two Sealing Rooms, and one baptistry, encompassing a total of 17,247 square feet.
The architectural rendering of the temple was unveiled on October 1, 2020, illustrating a modern and welcoming design. The establishment of this temple is particularly significant as it alleviates the need for members to travel 13 hours to reach the Johannesburg South African Temple. The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will be the first in Zimbabwe and the eighth in Africa, representing an important milestone for the local community, which comprises approximately 26,000 members organized into six stakes and two districts.
Furthermore, the visit of Prophet Russell M. Nelson to the temple site on April 17, 2018, during his tour, contributed to heightened enthusiasm and support for this Temple. The Harare Zimbabwe Temple is anticipated to serve as a vital center of faith and community, fostering spiritual growth and connection among its members. We look forward to witnessing the Open House of this significant endeavor, which will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the region.
