LDS Temple News Presents Idaho Falls Idaho Temple a House of the Lord
Located at 1000 Memorial Dr, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple stands as a testament to faith and architectural beauty. Announced on March 3, 1937, this site arose from a vision that intertwined spirituality with a deep respect for history and heritage.
Historical Milestones
The journey to the completion of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple began with a groundbreaking ceremony on December 19, 1938, led by Elder David Smith. This pivotal moment set the stage for a project that would require dedication and resilience, culminating in its dedication on October 19, 1940, by the Prophet David O. McKay.
The Temple has seen various transformative phases, marked by the most recent open house held from April 22 to May 20, 2017. Two years of renovation led to a grand rededication on June 4, 2017, conducted by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. This renovation introduced notable features, including an additional exit for the Bride and Groom’s room, a spacious wedding waiting area, and upgraded electrical systems.
Architectural Features
Spanning 85,624 square feet and reaching a height of 156 feet, this Temple is a stunning architectural marvel built on 8.28 acres. With reinforced concrete exterior walls covered in white cement and aggregate cast stone, the design is not only striking but also durable. A central spire, topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, enhances its visual splendor.
The Temple’s features impressively include four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, allowing for varied ceremonial practices. Unique among temples, it is one of only seven where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room, echoing practices found in the Manti Utah, Laie Hawaii, Cardston Alberta, Mesa Arizona, Los Angeles California, and Nauvoo Illinois temples.
A Living History
Reflecting a rich past, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was the first of its kind built in Idaho and holds the distinction of being the only temple dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith. Moreover, it was the first Temple constructed with a central spire, a feature that has since become iconic.
During its early years, the Temple presented endowment ceremonies with live acting, creating a unique experience for those participating. The scenery surrounding the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple adds to its charm, with cascading waters of the Snake River providing a picturesque backdrop.
In the 1960s, the Temple featured three reflection ponds adorned with small fish and water lilies. However, with renovations in 2011, these were transformed into vibrant flowerbeds, now complemented by a stunning waterfall feature.
A Nod to Ancient Inspiration
Intriguingly, the design of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple draws inspiration from a vision of the ancient Nephite Temple, connecting the past to the present. While excavating, builders uncovered large lave rock, which was creatively utilized for the basement walls.
Construction challenges arose during World War II, delaying the interior completion beyond initial timelines. The exterior was finalized in 1941, but the full interior was not completed until four years later.
Conclusion
The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is more than a physical presence; it embodies a journey of dedication, inspiration, and transformation. From its historic roots to its contemporary renovations, this site continues to serve as a vital space for reflection and connection within the local landscape. Whether one is drawn to its architectural beauty or the rich narratives woven into its history, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is undeniably a cherished asset to the region.
