The Indianapolis Indiana Temple was publicly announced by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson on October 2, 2010. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on September 29, 2012, presided over by Elder Donald L. Hallstrom. Shortly after this ceremonial event, the public open house occurred, running from July 17, 2015, through August 8, 2015, attracting a remarkable 90,000 attendees. Ultimately, the Indianapolis Indiana Temple was dedicated on August 23, 2015, by the Apostle Henry B. Eyring.
Architectural Highlights
Covering 18.11 acres, the Indianapolis Indiana Temple boasts an impressive 34,000 square feet of interior space. Its height reaches 106.4 feet, with a striking single attached end spire crowned by a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. The exterior is adorned with Aero Cream limestone, quarried in Myra, Turkey. Its design echoes the historical memorials found in downtown Indianapolis, such as the Indiana World War Memorial.

The theme of the interior reflects the artistry of the region. The original mural, painted by Michael Albrechtsen from Olathe, Kansas, showcases landscapes of Indiana. The decorative paint on ceilings and wall panels incorporates Celtic knot motifs, while lavish details of the tulip poplar blossom enrich various rooms throughout.
Materials and Finishes
Bronze was utilized in the exterior doors, featuring the ancient design of the circle within a square, reminiscent of the city’s historical platting. Alongside unique marble sourced from countries including Iran and Pakistan, the interior showcases various shades of blue with gold and green accents, painstakingly selected to complement the limestone exteriors.
Cultural Significance
The Indianapolis Indiana Temple is not just significant for its physical presence but also represents the history of the Latter-day Saints in Indiana. The first stake in the state was organized in Indianapolis on May 17, 1959, by Elder Spencer W. Kimball. Remarkably, even after early members of the Church migrated further west, a resurgence of the community occurred during the early 20th century leading up to its dedication.

The landscape surrounding the temple features various plants and trees indigenous to Indiana, including the state tree, the tulip poplar. According to President Koy E. Miskin, a member of the first Indianapolis temple presidency, the region previously hosted 30 active Latter-day Saint branches in the mid-1840s, a reminder of the Church’s long history in the state.
