LDS Temple News Presents Kona Hawaii Temple

Nestled on the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii, the Kona Hawaii Temple stands as an architectural gem and a serene spiritual sanctuary. This temple is the sixth built in Polynesia and the second in Hawaii, following the historic Laie Hawaii Temple, which was dedicated in 1919.

The journey began with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 13, 1999, led by John B. Dickson, marking the start of an ambitious project that would become a cornerstone for the local community. On January 12-15, 2000, the temple opened its doors to the public for a grand open house, leading up to its dedication on January 23-24, 2000, by the beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.

Set on a picturesque 7.02-acre site, the Kona Hawaii Temple is an elegant structure, featuring a stunning single attached spire that rises 73 feet into the Hawaiian sky. With a total area of approximately 12,325 square feet, the temple boasts two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, catering to the spiritual needs of its patrons.

As of October 2023, the Kona Hawaii Temple has temporarily closed for extensive renovations, which are expected to be completed by early 2027. This renovation will not only enhance the temple’s square footage from 9,500 to around 12,000 but will also update its exterior appearance, ensuring it continues to be a beautiful landmark along Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.

During this time, church members are encouraged to visit the Laie Hawaii Temple while the Kona Temple undergoes its transformative changes.

The Kona Hawaii Temple, clad in bright white marble and surrounded by swaying palm trees, is more than just a building; it embodies peace and spiritual refuge. It’s located in the coastal community of Kailua-Kona, just 8 miles south of the Kona International Airport, making it accessible for visitors and locals alike. Perched above the stake center for the Kona Hawaii Stake, the temple features beautiful gardens, terraced water features, and a pair of elegant staircases, inviting peace and contemplation.

Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor, the Kona Hawaii Temple offers a stunning backdrop for reflection and reverence, capturing the essence of Hawaii’s natural beauty and spiritual richness.
