The journey to establish the Los Angeles California Temple began on March 6, 1937. As the 10th dedicated Temple of The Church, its construction faced delays due to World War II, allowing for enhancements to its design. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 22, 1951, led by the Prophet David McKay.
In his remarks during the temple’s dedication, President McKay described the service as one of the most memorable in church history, highlighting the attendance of numerous general authorities. The public open house from December 19, 1955, to February 18, 1956, attracted a remarkable turnout of over 632,361 individuals, illustrating the interest and support for the Temple.
Architectural Features
Spanning 13 acres, the Los Angeles California Temple boasts an impressive 146,000 square foot area and reaches a height of 257 feet, sitting at an elevation of 289 feet. The exterior features a unique Mo-Sai stone facing, combining crushed quartz and white Portland cement sourced from Utah and Nevada, complemented by Rockville granite from Minnesota. These materials not only enhance the Temple’s aesthetic appeal but also aid in resisting vandalism.
The Temple is crowned by a single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, which stands 15 1/2 feet tall and was sculpted by Millard Mallin. This statue is among five Temples worldwide where the Angel Moroni holds the Gold Plates, alongside notable examples in Jordan River, Washington D.C., Seattle, and Mexico City.
Interior Design
Inside, the Los Angeles California Temple contains four instruction rooms that follow a progressive style, along with ten sealing rooms and a baptistry. The total interior area measures 190,614 square feet. The main assembly room can seat 2,000 individuals and features three pulpit areas. One of the Temple’s unique aspects is the presence of hand-painted murals within its ordinance rooms, including the Creation Room and the Celestial Room.
The Los Angeles California Temple has undergone several renovations over the years, including a significant remodel for its 25th anniversary in 1981, which introduced audiovisual capabilities. In 2003, the Temple reverted to a progressive-style presentation format and underwent additional renovations in 2005, reopening in July 2006.
Grounds and Additional Features
Situated on Santa Monica Boulevard in Westwood, the Temple’s grounds are landscaped with a variety of trees, including Canary Island pine and rare Chinese ginkgo. The presence of two fountains and a beautiful reflection pool adds to the tranquility of the environment.
There are family-themed statues throughout the grounds, as well as a dedicated family history center. In December, the Temple grounds shine brightly with thousands of Christmas lights, creating a festive atmosphere.
