The story of the Manhattan New York Temple is truly inspiring! President Gordon B. Hinckley, who played a key role in bringing this vision to life, shared how divine inspiration guided them to locate the temple in Manhattan after some initial challenges in finding the right spot. Originally built in 1976 as a stake center, the building underwent a beautiful transformation starting in 2002. By June 2004, the temple was dedicated—what a moment that was for everyone in the New York City area!
During its public open house, more than 53,000 guests came to explore this lovely sanctuary, capturing the community’s joy and excitement.
Architectural Wonders Inside and Out
The Manhattan New York Temple is a stunning sight! Its beautiful travertine exterior is complemented by a tall corner spire topped with the angel Moroni statue. Inside, you’ll discover tranquil spaces designed just for worship, including two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry.
One of the fun little details? The door handles throughout the temple are shaped like the Statue of Liberty’s torch—what a charming nod to New York City’s rich history! When you enter, you’ll see a door inscribed with “Holiness to the Lord,” welcoming you into a peaceful haven away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Exciting Renovations Ahead
The temple recently closed its doors for some exciting renovations on March 2, 2024. Over the next three years, updates will refresh its exterior and enhance the beautiful interior spaces we all love. The renovation is set to wrap up in early to mid-2027, followed by a big open house and rededication celebration that we can’t wait for—mark your calendars!
