The Medford Oregon Temple was announced to the public on March 15, 1999, during a General Conference by the Prophet. This announcement marked the beginning of an exciting journey for both the local congregation and those invested in its creation. On May 20, 1999, D. Lee Tobler conducted the groundbreaking and site dedication, laying the foundation for what would become a vital space for the faithful.
A Memorable Open House
A public open house ran from March 24 to March 29, 1999, inviting the public to view the Temple before its dedication. The turnout was remarkable, with 46,000 attendees, exceeding expectations by 16,000. This overwhelming response illustrated the community’s keen interest and anticipation for the Temple’s role in their lives.
Dedication and Features
The Medford Oregon Temple was formally dedicated on April 16, 2000, by Apostle James E. Faust. Covering an area of 10,700 square feet, this single-story design is built on an expanse of 2 acres at an elevation of 1,272 feet.
Architectural Highlights
The exterior of the Temple features a striking gray granite finish, sourced from Mount Airy, North Carolina. A single attached end spire is adorned with a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, making it a distinct feature of its architecture.
Facilities Within the Temple
Inside, the Temple offers 2 instruction rooms, 2 sealing rooms, and 1 baptistry, providing essential spaces for the various aspects of its purpose. The design and functionality of the Medford Oregon Temple ensure that it meets the needs of its members effectively.
A First for the Area
This Temple holds the honor of being the first Temple built in the city of Central Point, as well as in Jackson County. It is also the second Temple established in Oregon, following the Portland Oregon Temple, which was completed in 1989. Notably, both the general contractor and job superintendent responsible for the construction were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, showcasing a deep commitment to the project from local members.
