Announced on September 17, 1998, the excitement for this sacred site was palpable. Less than a year later, on January 16, 1999, Elder Gordon T. Watts ceremoniously broke ground, setting in motion the creation of a spiritual sanctuary that would serve thousands.
The temple generously opened its doors for a grand public open house from April 8 to 15, 2000, allowing the community to marvel at its splendor before its official dedication on April 23, 2000, led by Elder James E. Faust. In a testament to its enduring significance, the temple once again welcomed visitors during an open house from April 13 to 20, 2019, culminating in a rededication ceremony on May 5, 2019, presided over by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland.
Set on an expansive 6.35 acres, the Memphis Tennessee Temple features a striking exterior of beige limestone, exuding elegance and grace. Its bold spire, topped with a gleaming gold leaf angel Moroni, reaches majestically toward the heavens. Inside, the temple encompasses two instruction rooms, two celestial rooms, and one baptistery, all thoughtfully designed within a spacious 10,890 square feet.
Reaching a height of 83’9″ and perched at an elevation of 323 feet, this architectural marvel stands as a prominent landmark at 4199 Kirby-Whitten Parkway. Uniquely situated alongside a chapel serving the Tennessee North stake, the temple fosters a strong sense of community and connection among the faithful.
As the first temple established in the great state of Tennessee, it signifies a cornerstone of faith in the region. A significant renovation began on September 29, 2017, revitalizing the temple’s interior, exterior, and grounds, enhancing both its beauty and functionality. This included a remarkable 10-foot elevation of the steeple, further elevating the temple’s presence.
Inside, the temple boasts stunning design elements that evoke warmth and tranquility. Gold leaf pinstriping in the instruction, celestial, and sealing rooms adds a touch of sophistication, while vibrant art glass with infinity bell flowers and lazy eight motifs creates an inviting ambiance. Antiqued bronze pendant lighting complements the interiors beautifully, highlighted by a neoclassic crystal and brass chandelier that adorns the celestial and sealing rooms.
The flooring showcases Daphne white stone tile from Sorrento, Florida, enhancing the entry, baptistry, and brides’ room. In addition, intricate rugs featuring a pawpaw flower field pattern and lazy eight borders in rich greens, blues, and creams add a welcoming touch to the entry, waiting room, and brides’ room.
