The Memphis Tennessee Temple is a proud symbol of faith and architectural brilliance, standing as the 80th dedicated temple in operation. Its journey began with an exciting announcement on September 17, 1998, and by January 16, 1999, Elder Gordon T. Watts had ceremoniously broken ground, setting the stage for a spiritual landmark.
The temple opened its doors for an impressive public open house from April 8 to 15, 2000, allowing eager visitors to experience its allure before the official dedication on April 23, 2000, officiated by Elder James E. Faust. Fast forward to 2019, and the temple once again embraced the community with an open house from April 13 to 20, leading to a rededication ceremony on May 5, 2019, presided over by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland.
Strategically positioned on a beautifully landscaped 6.35 acres, the Memphis Tennessee Temple’s exterior, clad in exquisite beige limestone, commands attention. Its crowning glory is a single, elegantly attached spire topped with a shimmering gold leaf angel Moroni, making it an unmistakable landmark in the area. Inside, visitors will find two instruction rooms, two celestial rooms, and a baptistery, all meticulously designed within the impressive 10,890 square feet of the temple.
Standing tall at 83’9″ and perched at an elevation of 323 feet, the temple is strategically located at 4199 Kirby-Whitten Parkway in Bartlett. Notably, it shares its parking lot with a chapel serving the Tennessee North stake, fostering a strong sense of community and connection.
As the first temple built in Tennessee, it plays a crucial role in serving its members. The temple underwent a significant renovation starting September 29, 2017, enhancing its beauty and functionality. This renovation included a striking 10-foot elevation of the steeple, further elevating its stature in the community.
Inside, the Memphis Tennessee Temple is a masterpiece of design and decor. Elegant gold leaf pinstriping in the instruction, celestial, and sealing rooms adds sophistication, while vivid art glass featuring infinity bell flowers and lazy eight motifs creates an inviting ambiance. Antiqued bronze pendant lighting casts a warm glow throughout, with a stunning neoclassic crystal and brass chandelier gracing the celestial and sealing rooms.
The temple’s flooring showcases Daphne white stone tile from Sorrento, Florida, leading visitors through the entry, baptistry, and brides’ room in style. Rugs adorned with a pawpaw flower field pattern and lazy eight borders in soothing greens, blues, and creams enhance the overall warmth, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere.
