LDS Temple News Presents Oakland California Temple
The vision for the Oakland California Temple began in April 1928 when Elder George Albert Smith had an inspiring experience that hinted at its future. During a meeting at the Fairmont Hotel, he proclaimed a vision of a “white temple of the Lord” gracing the hills of the East Bay, serving as an emblem for travelers entering the bay. This vision was later realized when the temple was announced on January 23, 1961.
The groundbreaking event took place on May 26, 1962, led by the Prophet David O. McKay, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the area. The first Public Open House occurred from October 5 to 31, 1964, allowing many to experience its beauty prior to the second dedication on November 17-19 of that same year, again officiated by McKay.
Architectural Features
The Oakland California Temple covers an impressive 80,157 square feet and is 170 feet tall, standing on an elevation of 664 feet. Its exterior is composed of reinforced concrete adorned with Sierra white granite sourced from Raymond, California. Architectural features include a central spire accompanied by four smaller spires, which contribute to its graceful silhouette.
A notable aspect of the design are the two 35-foot sculpted panels depicting Jesus Christ teaching, serving as visual reminders of the temple’s mission. The property spans 18.1 acres and includes cascading waterfalls and creek-style water features, enhancing its peaceful environment.
Subsequent Developments
The temple saw its third Public Open House from May 11 to June 1, 2019, allowing for more individuals to experience this beautiful site. Following this, the third rededication occurred on June 16, 2019, led by the Prophet Dallin H. Oaks.

Brigham Young’s prophecy about the Pacific shores being visible from the temple is fulfilled with the Oakland California Temple, which overlooks the San Francisco Bay Area. This connection to prophetic utterances adds a spiritual depth, linking the temple’s existence to broader faith narratives.

Inside, the Oakland California Temple includes four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, designed to cater to various needs.
