The Ogden Utah Temple is a striking symbol of faith and community, proudly serving as the 14th temple in operation. Its story began on August 24, 1967, with an announcement that sparked enthusiasm and anticipation throughout the region. The first site dedication took place on September 8, 1969, led by Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer, marking a significant milestone in the temple’s journey.
That same day, the groundbreaking was conducted by Hugh B. Brown, further illustrating the temple’s strong foundation. After much anticipation, the doors of the Ogden Utah Temple swung open for a public open house from December 16-30, 1971, welcoming an impressive 181,000 visitors eager to appreciate its beauty and spiritual sanctuary.
The temple was officially dedicated from January 18-20, 1972, by Joseph Fielding Smith, firmly establishing its vital role in the community. Fast forward to August 1 through September 6, 2014, when the temple held a second open house, culminating in its rededication on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson—an event that reinforced its enduring significance.
Nestled on 9.96 acres in the heart of downtown Ogden, the temple features an exterior of magnificent granite quarried and fabricated in China. Its architectural grandeur is crowned by a single central spire, topped with a gold-leafed angel Moroni statue that resonates with inspiration. Inside, the temple offers six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all within a spacious 112,232 square feet—a true sanctuary for worship and reflection.
With a height of 188 feet and 8 inches, the temple reaches an elevation of 4,299 feet, standing tall and proud amid its picturesque surroundings. It enhances the landscape with its stunning water features, vibrant trees, and meticulously manicured grounds, creating a serene and inviting environment for all who come to visit.
The Ogden Utah Temple not only ranks as the fifth temple built in Utah but also stands out as the first dedicated in the state—80 years after the previous four were consecrated during a time when Utah was still a territory. A poignant moment in its dedication history occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee completed the dedicatory prayer, stepping in as Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith became too weak to continue.
